NIKIPEDIA

James Nikitine

Hi! Before you move on, I would like to answer a question that probably came to mind after you read my name.

Is your last name pronounced just like nicotine?

The short answer: yes.

If you want the long answer, then I've provided a little help down below:

Nikitine (Nikitin)

Nikitin (Russian: Никитин), or Nikitina (feminine; Никитина) is a common Russian surname that derives from the male given name Nikita and literally means Nikita's.

I'm currently at the University of California, San Diego majoring in Cognitive Science with a specialization in Design and Interaction.

I'll be graduating in June 2026 with the goal of working as a product designer.

If you can help me fulfill that goal, I would love to hear from you!

Work

About

Early Interests

I've been drawn to design since I was about 13, when I first taught myself Photoshop (thanks to a very questionable Craigslist download and my dad's support). Growing up, I also spent a lot of time playing soccer and got into competitive gaming, especially Destiny, which shaped my interest in digital systems and interaction.

Finding Product Design

My path through community college wasn't entirely linear, but during that time I discovered product design and felt like it perfectly brought together my love for design and technology in a way that could actually do meaningful work.

How I Think About Technology

Growing up as an only child in a fairly secluded area, technology was my main way of connecting with the world through YouTube, gaming, and online communities, and it continues to shape how I think today. I am deeply interested in consumer products of all kinds, from new electronics to everyday tools like a great dry/wet vacuum, and I have a special appreciation for Craigslist, which I consider one of my favorite products. More broadly, I am drawn to technology that is genuinely useful, empowering, and thoughtfully designed.

What I Want to Build

Especially after my studies at UCSD, I'm committed to wanting the best for technology: building products that make people feel capable, connected, and hopeful rather than anxious or alienated.
